Guide To Ratio at Karagarga
We've all been n00bs. And will remain so on many aspects of life until the grave. We're welcoming lots of new members lately, some of them new to bittorrent. So here, very simply, all those little pieces together.
1 Make sure your port is open
To focus your mind, there are 3 steps:
- set up static IP
- set a fixed port in your client, and open that port in your router or 'modem'
- open that port in your firewall
On the announce page of your active torrents, you should see your port number next to your alias. If it says ---- , the tracker sees your port as closed.
Canyouseeme.org is a good site to check if your port is open.
When your port is open, you're connectable. If it's not, you can only connect to others whose port is open. When you cannot open your port, like on a campus, you have a handicap and you'll need more care and patience in the game.
2 Make sure you're using a client that is allowed here
eg. utorrent 1.8.5 (build 17414)
3 Don't get caught in the cookie jar
The KG library can be mouthwatering; there are those things you wanted to see for a long while! And of course you need to see them now, you being such an artistic person and all... that's the surest way to build our ratio and to ruin yours. So let those existing torrents wait until you can afford them.
4 Don't be in a big hurry
It pays to develop a feel for the kind of uploads that are popular here.
5 Get started
Jump as one of the first on a new upload that looks like a winner. A smallish file is ideal for you; don't start on a dvdr unless you have huge upload capacity. Leech 'n seed to kingdom come.
Many people advice p*rn, but many others did it without.
Torrents with many leechers and more than a day old can be a ratio trap. Many such torrents contain multiple files (like extras, chapters, etc.). The "leechers" you see are often partial seeders, who de-selected part of the files in their client. Some examples:
1. Inland Empire (D. Lynch)
2. Eastern Promises + Extras (D. Cronenberg)
3. Top 100 animated shorts
4. Graphic Novels Pack (909mb)
5. Berlin-Alexanderplatz (R.W. Fassbinder)
6 Keep seeding
...and be patient. Especially at the start of your career, just keeping those seeds open 24/7 can help.
7 Back it up
Back up everything. They will come begging for it in the future.
Get a feel for what belongs here. Make sure you know how to rip properly. Find gems that fit here in other corners of the web. Share after you pass that 3G threshold. Check the requests regularly. Mind you, part of us is doing just fine without uploading.
Go to your history page. At the top of your snatched torrents, click on Lch. Bookmark this page, it's a good addition to the home page when you feel like seeding a bit.
Go to the Reseed requests. Click on You have. Bookmark.
10 Share in other ways
Make missing (English) subtitles, build a nice and useful collection. You can get bonus for these things, because it's also sharing.
If you feel making subs is something for you, have a look in the subtitling forum and in its subforum The Pot.

FAQ and answers
Help, there are many leechers but I don't connect to them.
Are they downloading? Are you sure they aren't partial seeders, who only took part of the files?
Why is my upload speed so low?
Could be the other party's download speed is low. Could be you have competition from other seeders. In a few special cases could be some other internet problem.
Why is KG such a b**ch? I usually overseed on the Pirate Bay.
Swarms are much smaller here. After an initial flurry, a torrent may go to sleep for a long while.
Why are so many torrents dead here?
